Dr. Swati Bakshi

Assistant Professor

Dr Swati Bakshi is a broadcast journalist-turned-academic researcher. She holds a PhD in Film from the Centre for Research and Education in Art and Media (CREAM) at the University of Westminster in London. Her research interests lie at the intersection of media, gender and society, focusing on Hindi cinema, radio histories, and the contemporary digital media landscape. Her doctoral thesis stands as the first academic work on the pioneering film and media personality Sai Paranjpye. Dr Bakshi currently teaches courses in broadcast journalism, podcasting, film theory, and film history.

A graduate of the Indian Institute of Mass Communication in Delhi, Dr Bakshi has worked with national and international public service broadcasting companies, including All India Radio, DD News, the BBC World Service and Deutsche Welle. She is actively involved in public engagement writing and has published a book in Hindi (2025) on women filmmakers for popular consumption. Dr Bakshi produced and presented a limited-edition podcast called Cinemaya (2019), featuring eight Indian women film directors from the 1970s onwards. Through the experience of women directors, the podcast captures the cinematic practices and intricacies of work culture in Bombay cinema.
