Formerly starting off as a diploma course, the course is now recognized under the AICTE as a post-graduate program. The Post Graduate section is divided into Communication Management (MBA) and Mass Communication (MMC) specialisations in the second semester. The third semester or the second year sees further advancement in ones core specialisation with in-depth knowledge into advertising & public relations for the MBA students and Journalism & Audio-Visual for the MMC Batch. The course curriculum blends academics with industry orientation through its three internships (2 industrial & 1 NGO) and four live projects.
The only college stressing for three internships and 4 live projects as part of course curriculum.
The students are equipped with software skills such as Corel Draw, Photoshop, Dreamweaver html, Flash, PageMaker, 3 D Max & Maya animation software, Avid Pro, Final Cut Pro, Adobe Premier, Sound Forge, Adobe Audition, Quark Express, detailed study into MS-Office applications such as PowerPoint & Excel. Students are exposed to practical photography & shooting & post production sessions as in-class & take-home assignments, taught the basics of audiography, editing, etc.
1. Journalism
Number of Students: Senior Year – 43, Junior Year 47
The Journalism students can develop news writing & reporting capabilities, learning the structure of a news agency & responsibilities involved through regular interaction with the industry leaders of print, electronic, radio & cyber medium.
2. Audio Visual
Number of Students: Senior Year – 47, Junior Year 62
The Audio Visual students are equipped with the technicalities of filming, pre & post production techniques like editing, composing, mixing etc. They are given the prerequisite training through creation of short films/ documentaries.
3. Advertising
Number of students: Senior Year – 61, Junior Year 55
The Advertising students are familiarised with the structure of an agency & the relationship with the client through course modules in account planning, market research, media planning & buying, advertising management, creative planning, etc.
4. Public Relations
Number of students: Senior Year – 67, Junior Year 55
The public relations students are exposed to the key knowledge areas that equip them with corporate communications, event management, media relations, best of breed HR practices through case studies & discussions. SIMC is the first college offering full time degree course in Public Relations.
A fifth specialization – visual communication is in the offing, which will provide the pre-requisite skills needed in the television & cinema industry at large.
