Established in 1990, originally as the Symbiosis Institute of Journalism & Communication (SIJC), the Institute was renamed in 1999 as the Symbiosis Institute of Mass Communication (SIMC) to enable the Institute to go beyond journalism and introduce other media-related courses in the curriculum in keeping with industry requirements. Going with the times, SIMC has been finally christened Symbiosis Institute of Media and Communication. SIMC has evolved into a leading media and communication education and training Institute, providing the industry with trained and competent professionals. We are now a constituent of Symbiosis International University.

SIMC's mission is to serve the multi-faceted needs of the media and communications industry in particular, and society in general, through education, training, research and advocacy. We seek to develop competent, responsible and innovative professionals in the practice, development and management of media and communication. We offer Masters in Journalism and Audio-visual Communication and Management degrees in Advertising and Public Relations. Our alumni are now in well-placed positions across various media.

We have now moved to a spacious new campus amidst nature at Lavale, a fully residential campus with the best studio facilities, and an area that spreads over 300 acres. Many other Symbiosis Post-graduate institutes share this massive space. Aptly named Symbiosis Knowledge Village, this campus aims to be the seat of post-graduate education in Pune. Our Viman Nagar Campus and its established facilities are now being used by the newly founded Symbiosis Institute of Media and Communication (Undergraduate), extending the brand to inform and hone students of a younger age too.
